Tip Ins is a weekly update for all the news that happened in the NHL.

Jordan Staal is my favorite NHLer. But this will never be okay with me. But I completely understand it. (Phil Ellsworth/Carolina Hurricanes)

  • Earlier today, Rick DiPietro said in an interview that the New York Islanders “ripped my heart out, stabbed it, set it on fire and flushed it down the toilet” when they waived him last week. He also joked that he thought about killing himself. Bad idea in this day and age, Ricky Dips. He regrets it. (Sporting News)
  • Realignment is happening. Slowly, but surely. We’re looking at 2 Conferences each with 2 divisions and the introduction of wild card teams for the playoffs. (Hockey City)
  • Jordan Staal left Pittsburgh to have a bigger role on a team. He knew he could never do that in Pittsburgh with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin as #1 and #2 centers on the depth chart. Weird thing is, he actually playing less with the Carolina Hurricanes than he did in Pittsburgh. Sure his power play time has increased, but his even strength and penalty kill time has dipped as a result. I still wish him the best. Not tonight though… (Pensburgh)

  • Ryan Kesler just returned from an injury, but he’s gonna be out for the next 6 weeks with a broken right foot. He’s been somehow playing through it the last few games, but it look like he’s gonna be done for awhile. I’m sure the Canucks are hoping he can get off on the right(left?) foot upon his return. Yep, I’ll see myself out… (The Globe And Mail)
  • Evgeni Malkin, recently diagnosed with a concussion, skated for 30 minutes yesterday and he was on the ice earlier today doing tricks. Still no timetable for his return to the Penguins lineup. (Pittsburgh Penguins)
  • Two Jordan Staal articles? Well. It was bound to happen. But in this interview he talks about playing his old team and wanting to shut up his old linemates, Matt Cooke and Tyler Kennedy, who may chirp him during tonight’s game. (ESPN)
  • Teemu Selanne interview, anyone? In it he talks about staying in shape, the future of fighting in the NHL, and his life after hockey. He hasn’t ruled out playing past this year saying on the Olympics,”I haven’t really thought about it. I think if I play next year, then it’s the case again, but it’s too early to think about now.” Never leave, Teemu. Never leave. (Sporting News)
  • Concussions have been on the rise in the past 2 weeks. 11 players have been officially diagnosed with concussions in that time span, including young star Jeff Skinner, exciting rookie Vladimir Tarasenko and reigning Art Ross and MVP Evgeni Malkin. (New York Times)
  • There’s been a huge appetite for coach’s challenges in the NHL in recent years. Come March 21st, there may be a vote for it at the General Manager’s meetings. (The Globe And Mail)
  • Hat trick of Jordan Staal articles? Sure, why not. I read this one late last night. Apparently Jordan Staal ALMOST RE-SIGNED with the Penguins!?!?! RAAAAAAGE!!! (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)
  • VIDEO: In the latest round of Player’s Safety videos, Brendan Shanahan explains exactly what factors into a decision to suspend a player, he explains what goalie interference is, and what is considered a slewfoot. (YouTube, Suspensions) (YT, Goalie Interference) (YT, Slewfooting)
